Modern Czechoslovak history includes great heroism by the Czechoslovak people in
their fight for freedom. One such notable act of heroism includes the resistance
against the Warsaw Pact armies' occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. It
was recorded pictorially by Slovak photojournalist Ladislav Bielik.
Curated by Pavol Melus and organized to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the invasion, Bielik's "August '68" exhibit had its American premiere at the Koloman Sokol Gallery of the Slovak Embassy in Washington, DC last September. The exhibit displays enlarged photographs of Bratislava's streets taken by Bielik on August 21 and 22, 1968, and includes the world-famous photograph of a man exposing his chest in front of a tank.
There is no charge for the exhibit. The gallery is open to the public 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and for groups by appointment. Call Jeff Becker at 816-916-8970 for off-hour tours.
